Passat along with her sister ship Pamir competed in the last of the so-called Grain Races in 1949. The two ships left Port Victoria in Australia with 60,000 sacks of barley. On arrival in Penarth they could not unload the grain and so spent some time there before eventually they sailed on to Barry. They returned to Penarth and were there for 18 months before leaving in 1951 for service in the German Navy
