Junction of South William Street and Stuart Street. View from outside entrance to dry dock. Pub on right The Little Windsor, further down the street The Frampton. Landlords of the two mentioned pubs, Gwen and Arthur in the Little Windsor, then a landlady called Maxine, in the Frampton was Phil Harris and before him was a Lavina.
Built in 1918 as a WW1 B-class standard cargo ship by Ropner at Stockton-on-Tees. Sold on in 1919 to the French company Chargeurs Reunis.
So in this picture it would have been a relatively new vessel and looks as though it was decorated with dazzle camouflage.
Originally built as a coaster but soon converted to a suction dredger. Alas the conversion made her unstable and she capsized in the Bristol Channel on her first trip. Rescued by her sister ship Stan Woolaway and local tugs, she was towed to safety, then righted and repaired, with large stabilizing sponsons being added to her hull.
Her career at Newhaven and along the South Coast lasted many years after that.
