General cargo ship built in 1944 the Ministry of War Transport as EMPIRE PITCAIRN by J Readhead & Sons Ltd , South Shields. Taken over by Navy and converted for use as an aircraft repair and maintenance ship -names HMS Moray Firth. After the war converted back to cargo ship and renamed Linaria. After a number of other owners and names was broken up in 1967
Passat along with her sister ship Pamir competed in the last of the so-called Grain Races in 1949. The two ships left Port Victoria in Australia with 60,000 sacks of barley. On arrival in Penarth they could not unload the grain and so spent some time there before eventually they sailed on to Barry. They returned to Penarth and were there for 18 months before leaving in 1951 for service in the German Navy
