Was 10 years when war started; never evacuated; father had shop; rationing - ordering at city hall; grandmother part of ARP; sleeping in air raid shelters; bombings were horrible and people killed in Norwegian home; brother killed in forces; school life as normal; war effort like collecting newspapers; drills in school; gas masks; older girls dances with GIs; cinema; sleeping at other girls shelters; bombing, sirens, blackout was terrifying, still scared of thunder etc; lot of seamen killed, torpedoed, all nationalities; VE day; never the same after the war; war made Butetown much closer community
