- Freemans: War-time memories, air-raid shelters, bombing, being in school, evacuation & VE day etc. Campbell: 5 years old when war started, remembers hearing sirens and going to the shelters; evacuated to Aberdare in 1941 and came back in 1942 after her dad had died. Mother worked in Curran's, the ammunition factory. Sweets were rationed. Favourite memories when war ended because of all the street parties. Felt like helped the war effort as they had to knit in school. Remembers GI's, they were all black, had chocolate and chewing gum. Bombing in Bute Street where girl and father were killed. People who were in ARP, mixture of backgrounds. Everyone in the area helped each other during the war, presents for children whose fathers had died, generally for kids exciting time.
