Summary

Side One begins with Hazel Daprato [HD] describing the clothes she used to wear and her reputation for being the best-dressed girl in the bay. [00:06:15] Describes her house in Canal Parade. [00:12:40] HD tells stories about the shops in Tiger Bay, including Mary Ahmed’s sweet shop and Vulpits. She describes moving into one of the newly built flats in Loudoun Square. [00:17:30] HD tells about a journey to London and a man who took her furniture. [00:33:40] HD tells wonderful stories about her pet bird. At the end of side one, HD talks about Victor Parker, a musician who was the first person ‘to bring the jazz into Cardiff Bay’.

Side Two begins with more description of Vic Parker. HD and the other women sing some of Parker’s songs and talk about the calypso music he performed in the pubs and in Loudoun Square. [00:06:00] They discuss the different nicknames for people in Tiger Bay, including ‘Narker Parker’ for Vic Parker. [00:13:35] HD tells stories about the Countess of Bristol and the beautiful clothes she wore. Side two ends with discussion of the different flats built during the redevelopment of Tiger Bay, the former layout of Loudoun Square, fashion, and one interviewer asking HD what she would change about her life if she had the chance.
