Summary
The tape begins with Hazel Daprato [HD] describing her childhood in the Nazareth House in Newcastle upon Tyne. HD describes the death of her sister, Leonora, who died of consumption at age 6 and whose death was kept secret until HD left the house at age 16. She describes her work as a chambermaid at the Strand Palace Hotel in London where she worked for a few months before leaving for Cardiff at age 17. [00:19:30] HD talks about first arriving in Cardiff and meeting Annie Webb. She describes the houses in the area, the layout of the streets, and the cosmopolitan community of Tiger Bay. [00:34:00] HD describes her relationship with Ossin Adin, a Somali man she fell in love with but did not marry because of Annie Webb’s interference. She then describes the tragic deaths of the Webb siblings, Dicky, Kitty, and Nelly.
On side two, Hazel Daprato [HD] describes the work she did at a factory called Geskes in Cardiff Docks during the end of World War II. [00:08:15] and again [00:29:30] she talks about dancing, especially the jitterbug, in pubs and clubs like The Annex and The Colonial Club. HD talks more about Ossin Adin. [00:33:10] Describes the crowd work she did for three London films, Elephant Boy, Sanders of the River, and East Meets West.
